Late August is the beginning of the best window for overseeding cool-season lawns in Massachusetts. Overseeding replenishes bare or thin areas and introduces improved grass varieties that resist drought, disease, and insects.
Seed Selection: Choose a premium seed blend matched to your lawn’s sun/shade conditions. Look for cultivars labeled as disease-resistant and adapted to New England climates.
Preparation is Key: Mow the lawn short, rake away debris, and loosen the soil with a core aerator or dethatcher to improve seed-to-soil contact.
Timing Matters: Aim to overseed from late August through mid-September, when cooler nights and light autumn rains provide ideal conditions for seed germination.
Post-Seeding Care: Keep the soil consistently moist until new grass is established, then transition to a regular watering schedule.
Aeration (if Needed): If your soil is compacted or you see water pooling, consider core aeration in late August or early September. This improves root growth and nutrient uptake.
Sharpen and Service Equipment: End-of-summer is a good time to tune up your mower, trimmer, and other lawn care tools ahead of the busy fall season.
Monitor for Disease: Watch for unusual spots, rings, or patches, and consult your local extension service for diagnosis and treatment.
